OpenAI ChatGPT Ads: measure repeat bookings, not just first-visit leads

ChatGPT Ads may bring new prospects, but first bookings alone do not show whether the channel is worthwhile. Track whether those clients return and how much revenue they generate against what it cost to acquire them.

What OpenAI announced

OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads are expanding, with more advertisers able to reach people as they explore, compare and decide what to buy in ChatGPT. (OpenAI) For an appointment-based business, the practical question is not only whether an ad produces a lead or first booking. It is whether the people it brings in return.

OpenAI also describes its ad system as designed to understand conversational intent while keeping ads separate from answers. (OpenAI) That may make ChatGPT Ads an interesting channel to assess, but it does not tell you whether the clients you acquire will book again or generate enough revenue to justify the cost.

Before treating ChatGPT Ads as a regular budget line, decide what evidence would make the channel worth continuing. Start with the path from inquiry to repeat visit: how many people inquire, book a first appointment, attend it and then make a second booking? You can also track how long it takes for first-time clients to return.

A lead or first booking is an early signal, not a complete measure of value. A channel could appear inexpensive if you count only new inquiries, while bringing in clients who do not return. Conversely, a higher acquisition cost may be more acceptable if clients come back and generate revenue over time. These are possibilities to investigate in your own records, not outcomes to assume.

Use the same definitions for each channel. Decide whether you count a booking when it is made or when the client attends. Record cancellations and refunds consistently. If you compare a new channel with existing marketing, keep the time period and the type of service in view so you are not comparing unlike groups of clients.

Connect the ad to later visits

To assess repeat business, your booking and marketing records need a dependable way to connect an acquired client to the channel that brought them in. Capture the source when someone first inquires or books, then retain that source with the client record. If the source is missing or recorded differently by staff, be cautious about treating the results as precise.

Review clients from the same starting period together. For each group, look beyond the initial booking to second visits and later revenue. Consider whether the service typically involves a follow-up or a longer gap between visits before deciding how much time to allow for a fair assessment. Do not label clients as low-value simply because they have not yet had a reasonable opportunity to return.

For a clearer comparison, use attribution experiments—structured tests that assess whether marketing is contributing to the outcome. Compare ChatGPT Ads with other ways of acquiring clients using the same retention measures, rather than relying on clicks or first bookings alone. The aim is to learn whether the channel contributes customers who return, not to assume that every later visit came from one ad.

Protect client information

For a med spa, IV clinic or wellness business, keep health or treatment details out of ad-platform audiences and general marketing tools. Check whether privacy rules such as HIPAA apply to your business before using client information for marketing. You can evaluate acquisition and repeat visits with appropriate business records without sharing sensitive details with an ad platform.

What to do

  • Set a budget you can afford to test without assuming the channel will work.
  • Record the source of new inquiries and bookings consistently.
  • Track first appointments, second visits and later revenue by acquisition source.
  • Review the results before deciding whether to continue or change your spend.

A useful decision measure is CLV:CAC: customer lifetime value compared with customer acquisition cost. It connects what a client brings in over time with what it cost to acquire them. Vetraeus’s Acquisition Efficiency service helps businesses assess that relationship across channels. The principle is simple: judge ChatGPT Ads by the clients they help you keep as well as the clients they help you find.
